One of the best things ever to happen to my kitchen was when, a few years ago, a friend of mine had a summer fling with a visiting raw-foodie-cum-yoga-teacher-cum-tantric-sex-god. She was glowingly satisfied, and when he left town, he bequeathed unto her a bounty of raw treasures that she lovingly shared with me. We suddenly had pounds of raw cacao peppermint truffles, cacao coconut orange bars, cacao butter, cacao powder, cacao nibs, freshly hulled cashews, and what must have been at least $500 worth of fresh glistening black vanilla bean pods.
Three years later, I am finally using the last of the vanilla beans (sob). While I found myself scraping them into nectarine compotes and strawberry rhubarb pies just for delectable good measure, I mostly used them in smoothies. My Vita-Mix could handle me throwing them in whole, sans the whole scraping procedure, and they added incredible richness and subtlety. That may be the first time anyone has used those two adjectives to describe a smoothie, but hey, that’s what I’m here for.
So here, my friends, is the quintessential Superfood Porn Smoothie: creamy, chocolatey, vanilla-y, nutty, dark green, and entirely raw. Have at it. Almost as good as a non-tantric orgasm.
