This post was created in partnership with Rescue. All opinions are my own.
Bonne Bell lip gloss. A tattered copy of Neruda’s The Captain’s Verses. Licorice pastilles. Matte red lipstick. These were all purse standbys for me at one moment or another throughout my life. But even the most addictive of them (the Bonne Bell and the Neruda, of course) eventually fell away. From the time I was in middle school to this very moment, though, there has been one singular item that I always carry with me: Rescue Remedy. I inherited the penchant from my mother, who saw it as a cure-all for just about everything.
Teacher yells at you? Rescue Remedy. Car breaks down? Rescue Remedy. Get in a fight with your mom? Rescue Remedy. Boy is mean to you? That pie didn’t work out right? Your kid comes home with a ruined shirt? RESCUE REMEDY. My mom was a natural healer par excellence, never leaving home without a coterie of homeopathics. I took note. I listened. I learned. I assimilated.
Fundamentally, this meant imbibing the literal and figurative understanding that plants were our allies. The Bach Flower Remedies took distillations of various flowers and leaves into alcohol and drew out their innate healing qualities. Olive leaf for strength. Aspen for anxiety. And, of course, the prodigal blend of clematis, impatiens, rock rose, star of Bethlehem, and cherry plum for Rescue Remedy.
Clematis establishes a bridge between one’s interior and exterior worlds, delivering clarity and alertness. Impatiens lends steadfastness and empathy. Rock rose soothes panic. Star of Bethlehem helps to ease trauma. And cherry plum guides towards innate wisdom and right doing. These were the plants I learned to turn to in times of shock, injury, or emotional distress.
As much as I love relying on Rescue products, I’m also a huge fan of eating other foods and spices that soothe anxiety. Enter the ultra relaxing flavors and ingredients of this autumn green smoothie: Persimmon and pear for a subtle, mellow sweetness, spirulina to reduce inflammation and systemic toxins, cinnamon and nutmeg to warm the system and support circulation, vanilla to calm the mind, hemp seeds to nourish brain tissue, and an extra sprinkling of cacao nibs to encourage the production of oxytocin, the brain’s feel good hormone.
The smoothie is topped with fresh persimmon, pomegranate seeds, cacao nibs, and your favorite granola, and it tastes like a cozy bowl of oatmeal in liquid form. The perfect antidote to the stress of the holidays, and the madness of everyday life. If you freeze your fruit the night before, this’ll take you just a moment to blend up in the morning.
