Did y’all hear the word about probiotics? Your body has bazillions of bacterial cells growing and zooming around inside, and you can either feed the bad cells (think: salmonella, candida, etc.) or load up on the good ones—PROBIOTICS! I’ve been super into probiotics this year as a way to keep my internal flora (all the stuff you’ve got growing inside of your intestines) healthy and happy.

This smoothie packs a quadruple punch: Loads of vitamins from the citrus, protein and probiotics from the plain yogurt, tons of minerals from the bee pollen, omega 3’s a complete plant protein from the hemp seeds, and an extra dose of high concentration probiotic powder. Plus some vanilla and stevia (you can use xylitol, honey, maple, or other natural sweetener if you prefer).

So now I’m going to answer all of your questions:

1) Why blood orange? Because the market had no regular oranges. You can use a purple orange for all I care.

2) Where do I get bee pollen? Any natural foods store or farmers market. I like to buy mine from the same beekeepers who make my honey (oh hey, Aunt Willie’s Apiary!).

3) Where do I get probiotic powder? Any natural foods store or vitamin supply store. The good ones are refrigerated.

4) What if I don’t have bee pollen or probiotic powder? You can make the smoothie without both of these and it’ll still pack a punch.

Servings 1

Ingredients

  • ½ cup plain yogurt cow or goat
  • 1 whole orange peeled, deseeded, and separated into a few sections
  • ¼ tsp . vanilla extract
  • 3 tsp capsules probiotic powder or ½ . loose powder
  • 1 Tbsp . hemp seeds
  • 4 drops liquid stevia
  • 4 cracked ice cubes
  • 1 tsp . bee pollen for garnish

Instructions

  • Place yogurt, orange, vanilla, stevia, and ice cubes in blender. Twist open capsules of probiotic powder over the blender and empty contents. Blend until smooth and creamy. Top with bee pollen. Enjoy a super powered day.
